Windows Server 2003 SYSPREP

An old operating system however still much needed for lab environments and assistance to migrate to the newer versions.

SYSPREP is a little trickier to find in Server 2003.  First find the 2003 media and expand the deploy.cab file in the \SUPPORT\TOOLS folder to find SYSPREP.EXE utility.

When running use “Reseal” to match the more recent “Generalize | OOBE” setting.

Couple of gotchas I found today,

  1. Do not run on a Domain Controller otherwise you get a “Incompatibility between this tool and the current operating system” message
  2. Ensure that a EULA.TXT file exists in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 otherwise the computer will not start until the file is available
